5 Fragen an: Deelia Jõgi (Aerial Hoop Artistin)

12. Februar 2023 | News

1. Does your name “Deelia” have a special meaning in Estonia, where you come from?

In Estonia it doesn’t mean anything, but I think in Greece it means “From Delos” which is an island where Artemis and Apollo were born and in Finland it means “Visible”. My mom always thought it is a name of a princess, because she wanted me to be one.

2. How come that you’re living in Salzburg/Austria now?

I started studying performance art in Salzburg and that took me to Austria 6 years ago. I have always loved Austria since we came skiing here a few times when I was a kid.

“Words in a sentence are like poses in a sequence – the more you know them the more you can articulate and express yourself.”

3. What is it about Aerial Hoop that made you fall in love so passionately?

I think in general aerial apparatuses make me feel like I am flying. I enjoy playing with my own weight and forces. But specifically hoop I think it reminds me of a portal and it is so interesting to imagine going through it.

4. Do you dream about performing at a special event or location one day?

I hope to perform on top of a mountain one day with a 360 degree view over the mountains.

5. Is there an evergreen advice you repeatedly give your students?

To ask themselves before every practice “Why am I practising today?”, the answers can vary every day, but once they know what they want to get out of the practice they know how to approach it better. And of course “Breathe!”.

My guilty pleasure is … a patch of homemade cinnamon rolls which for one day I will eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The song that always makes me dance is … Into the open air” by Julie Fowlis, because it´s from one of my favorite Disney movie “Brave”.

I’m never getting tired of … stars and mountains, I could watch them forever.
